When Milton Verret asked Clive Chapman to pop over to Los Angeles for a morning, just before Christmas, Clive was pleased to be able to oblige. After all, Classic Team Lotus was delighted when Milton chose to send his 1968 Lotus type 56 Indy car to the Hethel workshops, for restoration in 2014, and appreciated his enthusiasm for the work done.
Milton had arranged a major press day for his wonderful car at the Fontana Raceway, a few miles east of LA central, and he wanted Clive to be there to present the car and its history to the assembled journalists. En route to the circuit, Milton sprang upon Clive a fantastic surprise; inviting him to demonstrate the car to the media.
Clive leapt at the opportunity and was proud to step into the cockpit. (Presumably Colin Chapman tried out the car in its day; in any case, it was a very special moment for Clive.) Returning to the pits after a couple of laps around the high speed banking, Clive declared it to be one of the most exciting experiences of his life.
